About Dialogue Theatre

Dialogue Theatre is an applied theatre technique.

It is designed to enable safe ways to facilitate difficult conversations.

It brings together immersive theatre and conflict transformation methodologies.

It is ideal for both actors and non-actors.

Dialogue Theatre unpacks conflicts and tensions by engaging audience and actor-characters in conversation.

It is a two part form - the Play & the Dialogue.

It takes role play into the realm of workshopping positive change.

It is a form of advocacy through facilitated and mediated dialogue.

Dialogue Theatre works equally well as a small group in-house workshop process, as a powerful medium for community conversations, and as a tool for public advocacy and institutional dialogue.

It has been applied extensively in Australia and Thailand to address difficult conversations such as political polarisation, systemic racism, inter-generational tensions, unconscious bias, discrimination in public service, multiculturalism, sexual health, racism in schools, cultural beliefs, censorship, and gender identity.

The module is also a toolkit of drama exercises and facilitation processes for practitioners to adapt and apply to existing practices.

The Dialogue Theatre Module can be purchased as the full package of 39 exercises together with a set of pdf resources that cover the development of a Dialogue Theatre project, safety & inclusion guidelines, the history of the form, useful facilitation tips, and several theoretical and methodological principles.
